Replacing vs. Refinishing

Bathtubs are subject to all sorts of stains and marks that just don’t come off even after hours of scrubbing. Homeowners really only have two options when deciding what to do with an embarrassingly stained bathtub. They can completely replace it, or they can refinish it.

When making this decision, the most important factor is cost. Replacing a bathtub can get costly, depending on the type and the labor required for the project. The cost for just the new tub can vary between $400 and $1,000 depending on the type. Labor is usually $200-$400 and takes about five hours. Don’t forget other materials like fittings for around $40 or debris disposal which is usually around $20.

Refinishing a bathtub with Refinish First can save up to 75 percent on the cost of replacement. It will look just like a brand new tub, without that new tub cost. They can refinish many bathtub surfaces including porcelain, fiberglass, acrylic and marble.

It typically takes 3 to 5 hours to refinish a bathtub and it is ready to use the next day. Homeowners don’t have to worry about additional damage to their bathroom like they would with a bathtub replacement. There is no demolition necessary, no debris left behind.

If homeowners have a damaged bathtub, or just want to change the color, they should give Refinish First a call. They can be in and out in no time!

Refinishing Outdoor Tile

Ceramic tile can be used outside, although it is not the first choice of many. It is highly water absorbent, giving it a low frost resistance. It is also more likely to become worn and chip easily. Refinish First can fix and refinish ceramic tiles that haven’t held up well to outside temperature changes.

Ceramic tiles usually carry a Porcelain Enamel Institute or PEI rating of 0 to 3, but can go up to a 5. These ratings indicate where the tile should be used depending on the level of foot traffic that certain area experiences.

  • Class 0: used where no foot traffic is anticipated; should only be used on walls for decoration such as backsplashes.
  • Class 1: used primarily for master bathroom floors where it is anticipated shoes will not be worn.
  • Class 2: used in main bathroom areas and bedrooms where slippers or soft-soled shoes will be present.
  • Class 3: used in light to moderate traffic areas; any area of the house, except heavy traffic areas such as the entry way and kitchen.
  • Class 4: used in areas where abrasive or dirt could be tracked; good for residential entry ways, kitchens, balconies and countertops.
  • Class 5: used in the heaviest traffic areas; suggested for residential, commercial and institutional flooring.

Because many types of ceramic tile have a relatively high water absorption rating, damage is to be expected over time. Refinish First can fix chips in tile and re-grout everything to make it look like new. They offer three standard, solid colors along with more than 30 stone accent finishes. Refinish First can also create almost any custom color desired.

The Refinishing Process

Refinishing the surfaces in your home or business comes with many benefits. It is generally faster and cheaper than if you choose to replace these surfaces. This creates less downtime, a big bonus for businesses especially. The labor involved is reduced, although the process does have many steps.

When refinishing a bathtub, the surface is cleaned thoroughly before an acid is applied to make the surface rough. This prevents the possibility of peeling or chipping later and helps the glaze adhere to the tub. The glaze is left to cure, and then the bathtub is sanded, buffed and polished. Bathtubs typically take only three to five hours to refinish and are ready to use within 24 hours.

When refinishing tile, it is first washed to get rid of any residue. Any chips that are present are filled in and then the tiles are re-grouted. Lastly, the finish is applied.

Countertop and tile refinishing from Refinish First comes with two different options. They can do a solid color or speckled finish or a stone finish. Countertops can also be repaired if they are accidentally scorched or chipped. The actual time required for the refinishing process can vary slightly depending on the finish option chosen for countertops.

The refinishing process can be done on many different surfaces from porcelain and cultured marble to laminate and tile. The bonding agent used by Refinish First creates a chemical bond between the old and new surface creating a surface that can last for 15 to 20 years or longer with the proper care.

How long does it take?

A standard size bathtub, in reasonable condition, takes only 3 to 5 hours for Refinish First to refinish. The tub will typically be ready to use within 24 hours, or even sooner with our special curing procedures.

How long will the new finish last?

With proper care and maintenance, Refinish First refinishing can extend the useful life of your fixtures for up to 15-20 years or more. These finishes are designed to stand up to daily use and do not require special care.

Will the surface look painted?

Benefit of Miracle Method to Property Managers

With potential savings of up to 75% over the cost of replacement, surface refinishing makes good sense for property management companies. Whether it is called refinishing, resurfacing or reglazing, each of these terms refer to the process of restoring or upgrading existing porcelain, cultured marble, tile, fiberglass or laminate surface to a like-new state. Refinishing is an affordable solution to give impossible-to-clean bathtubs, ugly tile and outdated kitchen countertops a fresh look that turns potential renters into tenants.

Even though surface refinishing is not necessarily new to property managers, what’s new is a proven process that really works and is guaranteed for one year. Professional surface refinishing by Refinish First is not a quick fix but a proven restoration process that saves sellers money and allows property management companies to rent a home or apartment more quickly and for a better price. Refinish First not only saves property managers time and money, but also the hassle and mess of removal and replacement of bathroom fixtures.

New coatings for kitchen countertops, especially Refinish First’s finish, are very popular for property managers who want to give a home that makeover look without the expense of installing expensive solid surface countertops. Natural Accents looks and feels like stone, but costs significantly less.

Quality refinishing is a craft that requires the proper materials, extensive training and experience to provide consistent, high quality results… and high quality results will save you money in the long run. Not all surface refinishing is of the same quality—cheaper isn’t always better. With many maintenance quick fixes, a company will often wind up paying more when the first attempt fails. Paying to have the same tub refinished twice over a 12-month period because the first refinish peeled costs substantially more than having it done right the first time. In addition, if the new finish failed once, it will likely do so again.

If you are a property manager hoping to more quickly rent your property at a higher price, give us a call. Refinish First has become the preferred refinisher for property managers.

The Refinish First – Steps to Refinishing Tile

  1. Your home comes first:
Refinish First takes great care to ensure that all the surrounding area is masked off and protected from overspray. Exhaust fans will be used to properly exhaust any unpleasant odors from the refinishing process.
  2. Surface preparation is very important:
The tile surface is cleaned using a special two-step process to remove any dirt, grease or other substance that may interfere with the refinishing process. All chips are filled and sanded until smooth and level.
  3. Making it stick – the critical difference:
The key to professional refinishing results is getting the new finish to stick to the old surface. The Refinish First bonding agent, is applied to the ceramic tile to chemically “bond” the new finish onto the old surface. It provides superior adhesion and greater durability and is safe to use and handle. It’s one of the key reasons why Refinish First has become the nation’s preferred refinisher. The bonding agent eliminates the need for dangerous acids, while creating a superior bond that allows Refinish First to confidently offer an adhesion warranty on ceramic tile surfaces.
  4. The new surface:
While Refinish First can match almost any color, our stone look finishes have become our most popular tile application. It is a technologically advanced coating that is not only beautiful, but also affordable and durable. Your Refinish First professional refinisher will be happy to provide you samples and demonstrate its durability.
